FSgt Alfred Charles Allberry
Born 12th July 1914
•Died 14th Sep 1942
37 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve
18 Mount Pleasant Avenue, Hutton
Alfred grew up in Hutton and after school got a job as a travelling salesman. When the second world war broke out he joined the RAF and became a navigator.
Some time after March 1941 he was sent to RAF Bathurst in Gambia.
In September 1942 he completed his tour of duty (an average of only about 35% of crews survived that far), meaning that he could return home and may have had the option to then train as a flight instructor. On 14th September he boarded a S.30 Empire Flying-boat as a passenger - it was bound for England via Lisbon.
Shortly after take-off the plane developed engine trouble and was forced to land in the sea, about 27 miles from the nearest coastline, which was Senegal. It broke up and sank. Alfred was one of 19 people who died. His body was recovered and it buried in Fajara War Cemetery in Gambia.
