Eric was born in 1922, the son of a Railway Clerk at Brentwood station. He left school probably at 14 and his father got him a job at Brentwood station.

On the cold morning of 6th January 1941, Eric was working at Brentwood station when there was an air raid on Brentwood - at about 10am a lone German bomber dropped almost 30 bombs on the area around the railway station.

Eric was killed in the attack. Another 20 people were wounded, 3 seriously.

The following month, the Essex Chronicle reported:

It can now be stated that Brentwood railway station was bombed by a lone raider one morning last month. It was about ten o'clock that the plane dived from out of a cloudy sky, and, "hopping" over the housetops, dropped several bombs before disappearing in the clouds. The "up" booking office was wrecked. There was hardly an intact pane of glass in the station canopies. A clerk was killed and three others were seriously injured.
