Pte Albert Hull
Born circa 1887
•Died 13th July 1916
7th Company Machine Gun Corps
31 Great Eastern Road, Brentwood
Albert was born and grew up in Brentwood. His family were in construction - his father worked as a platelayer for the railway and uncle was a bricklayer. Likely due to his father's trade, they lived not far from the station. Unfortunately, Albert's father died when Albert was only a boy and so him and his brothers got jobs as soon as they left school. In the 1911 census Albert and three of his brothers are all working as bricklayers, living with and supporting their mother.
His military records have not survived, so we don't know when exactly, but before July 1916 he joined the 7th Company of the Machine Gun Corps. He was probably with them for the defence of Vimy Ridge in May 1916 and then was moved to the Somme. It was during the Somme offensive that he was killed on 13th July 1916.
His gravestone in Puchevillers British Cemetery bears the inscription "Rest in peace your country called you from his heart-broken mother".
