Charles William Newman

Born 1887

Served in

Essex Yeomanry Household Cavalry

Lived at

103 High Street, Brentwood

Charles was the son of Walter Newman, who ran a successful saddler's business at 103 High Street - Charles would work in this business as a saddler himself after leaving school. In 1912, aged 25, he joined the Essex Yeomanry, a territorial force.

He left the territorial force in August 1914, presumably to serve in the regular army, but his army service records for the first world war no longer exist.

His brother Stanley volunteered for the Essex Yeomanry at the outbreak of the first world war, presumably serving alongside his brother, but was killed in 1915.
