Victor was born to John and Alice Kimber of 18 Victoria Road. His father worked as a house painter.
He joined up in the first world war, becoming a private in the 4th Battalion London Regiment in May 1915. After two months training, he was promoted to LCpl, but at his own request reverted back to being a private.
He remained in the UK with the London Regiment until July 1916, when he transferred to the Machine Gun Corps and was again promoted to LCpl. On 2nd November the same year he went over to France.
In January 1918 he was promoted to Corporal, and in August 1918 he received a gunshot wound to his right arm. He was sent back to England to recover, and was later discharged from the army with disability pay while he recovered.
After the war he got a job working as a telephonist for the post office and married Rosina, with whom he had a daughter.
