Born 1893

Died 21st Feb 1916

Served in

113th Battery 25th Brigade Royal Field Artillery

Lived at

1 Alfred Road later 30 Alfred Road, Brentwood

Alfred was born on Alfred Road, Brentwood, the third child of William and Harriet stokes. His father worked as a carman, driving carts, and the 1901 census shows they were a family with six children including Albert Thomas. Alfred Thomas was still living with his parents in 1911, by which time he had left school and was working as a general labourer.

His military records do not survive, so it is not clear when he joined the army. But he was certainly in the Royal Field Artillery during the first world war.

Alfred was in the 113th Battery, 25th Brigade, and that was part of the 1st Division throughout the first world war. His battery was armed with 18-pounder field guns. Alfred was killed on 21st February 1916, although at the time his battery does not seem to have been involved in any specific battle.
