Harry was the son of George and Annie Valentine, of 116 Ongar Road, Brentwood. His father was a foreman in the iron foundery at the Victoria Works on Ongar Road where Burgess & Co had an agricultural machinery factory.
His parents were able to send him to Brentwood School, which he left in 1911 aged 15, becoming a clerk in a London stockbrokers office.
Little information survives of his war service, but he was in the 2/1st Queen's Own Oxfordshire Hussars and Oxford and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry during the first world war.
After the war he became an insurance clerk, married, and brought up a family in Brentwood.
