Brentwood High Street Nursery

Built before 1830

A large area on the south east side of the high street, now occupied by St Thomas' Road and the surrounding buildings, was originally a large garden nursery. It is described as early as 1830, when it was owned by 'Mr Breeze'.

Since the start of the 19th century, it had become more and more popular to be a "gentleman gardener", and with the growth of large houses surrounding Brentwood the demand for impressive plants and trees had grown enormously.

For that reason, this large plant nursery was built in the fields on the south east side of Brentwood and was slowly encroached upon by building - starting initially with the new church in 1835 - until it was completely built over by the mid 20th century. The owner of the nursery seems to have been involved, at least in the 19th century, in managing and maintaining the grounds of important houses around Brentwood.
