Warley Hill Methodist Church
Built 1892

After outgrowing their meeting house at Primrose Hill), the Brentwood Wesleyan Methodist congregation had struggled to find a new place to worship - they ended up renting space in the town hall on Sundays to gather. At last, in 1878, land became available on Warley Hill near the station. One member of the church bought the land and the congregation came together to build a small chapel over the course of six days.
This church functioned until 1892 when the congregation was established enough and enough money had been raised to construct a more permanent church on the same site. The foundation stones were laid in an official ceremony on Thursday 12th May 1892 with a large gathering of people watching. The previous small chapel on the same site had been set back from the road, and was converted into a schoolroom with the new church built in front of it. The total cost of building it was about £1,175. In 1931 it was extended and new school rooms were added to the back, replacing the original chapel.
The front of the church was remodelled in the 1960s and finally at the end of 2021 the building was sold and converted into the first mosque in Brentwood.
